Study Abroad and Exchange

The University of Adelaide's Study Abroad and Exchange programs allow students who are already enrolled at universities outside Australia to study in Adelaide for one or two semesters. The programs offer an exciting opportunity for students to combine a high quality academic and cultural experience while living in the city of Adelaide.

Am I a Study Abroad or Exchange student?

Exchange program

You are eligible to be an exchange student if:

  • your home institution has a formal Student Exchange agreement with the University of Adelaide; and
  • you are nominated for the program by the exchange coordinator of your home institution and if you meet the Entry Requirements. Please note that the completed Exchange Application form must be forwarded by the exchange coordinator at your home institution; we are not able to accept Exchange Applications submitted directly by students.

Exchange students remain enrolled with their home institution and continue to pay tuition fees to their home institution. Exchangees may study at the University of Adelaide for one or two semesters. The academic program you undertake may be credited towards your degree as per the formal agreement between the two institutions; it is your responsibility to liaise with the exchange coordinator at your home instititution regarding credit transfer.

For University of Adelaide students who wish to study overseas on exchange at one of our partner institutions please visit the Adelaide Abroad (Outgoing Exchange Program) web site.

Study Abroad program

If your home institution does not have a formal Student Exchange agreement with the University of Adelaide you may apply for the Study Abroad program.

As a Study Abroad student, you:

  • study at the University of Adelaide for one or two semesters on a non-award basis
  • pay tuition fees to the University of Adelaide
  • are responsible for contacting the Study Abroad advisor at your home institution to discuss obtaining credit for the studies you will undertake at the University of Adelaide
  • may apply directly to the University of Adelaide or through one of our International Representatives
  • may commence study in either First Semester (February) or Second Semester (July)

Entry Requirements for the Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

Academic Entry Requirements

Students should have completed at least one year at their home university at the time of participation in the Study Abroad or Exchange program. Students will need to provide evidence of a GPA of at least 3.0, or grades equivalent to a B/credit average, in order to gain admission.

English Language Entry Requirements

Study Abroad and Exchange students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency as follows:

*IELTS - Overall band score of at least 6.0 with a minimum band score of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking and 5.5 in Reading and Listening

*TOEFL - Score of at least 550 with a minimum score of 4.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE)

Computer-based TOEFL - Score of at least 213 with a minimum score of 4.0 in Essay Rating

Students who wish to study Law must achieve a higher level of English language proficiency, as follows: *TOEFL Minimum score of 250/600 with an Essay Rating/TWE of 5.0 or *IELTS Minimum overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum band score of 7.0 in Writing and Speaking and 6.5 in Reading and Listening

*These tests must have been taken in the two years preceding the application.

Students from Norway, Sweden and Germany may submit alternative evidence of their English language proficiency (except for Law -- see above), as follows:

Germany: a grade of at least "satisfactory" in English in the final year of high school, plus a score of at least "b" in each section of the DAAD English Language Proficiency Test

Norway: a minimum grade of 4 in English in upper secondary school Vitnemal fra de Videregaende Skolen

Sweden: a minimum grade of VG in English in upper secondary school Avgansbetyg

Please note that all students from countries where English is not the first langugae must provide a TOEFL or IELTS score if they wish to study Law.

Students who do not meet these requirements may consider enrolling in a Pre-Enrolment English program (PEP). The length of this program depends on the current level of English - for example, a student with an IELTS score of 5.5 would require a PEP of 10 - 15 weeks. Please note that the cost of the PEP is not covered by the exchange program -- students who enrol in the PEP will need to pay for the cost of the program.

Important note: Students who are citizens of countries classified by Australian government immigration regulations as Assessment Levels 3-5 must submit an IELTS test result as part of their student visa application, even if the University has accepted alternative evidence of English language proficiency. No other test (not even the TOEFL) is accepted for this purpose.

How to Apply

Application forms for Student Exchange must be submitted through the International Office of your home university. We are not able to assess applications submitted directly by students. Please review the information on Course Restrictions for the Study Abroad and Exchange Programs before completing your application.
